20 years!

Yes, it's already 20 years from the day when Linux started growing!
As ususal when there's an anniversary it's time to take a look in the past to see what happened, well it seems that in 20 years, moving slowly and hidden for a long time but constantly growing, Linux defeated its biggest rival: Windows!

Countdown!

The new version of Ubuntu's coming! Its name is Natty Narwal (it's more friendly than 11.04 this way, every release has a nickname), and even if I still don't know if I'm going to immediately switch to it or not I thought that's a nice idea to put a nice countdown on this blog...I like countdowns...like when holidays are approaching!

PS: if you want to try Natty now, you can download the Beta version from the official Ubuntu website (www.ubuntu.com), but since it's still a beta, and consequently there are still bugs here and there, it's better to avoid it when you're still a newbie like me ;)

The next version of Ubuntu is coming soon

Wasn't it easy?

A couple of days ago I wrote that Ubuntu is easy, that it is user friendly, that even if you're not a geek you can still enjoy it...and then I posted some weird stuff, that the average Windows user maybe has never seen before...stuff like that:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-next
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-4.0

Well it can seem scary!
But don't worry, even if you don't understand absolutely anything about computers you can still enjoy Ubuntu for the following reasons:

Firefox 4.0 on Ubuntu 10.10

As I said before Ubuntu comes with some pre-installed softwares, and the default web browser is Firefox, version 3.6.

Here's a small guide to install Firefox 4.0 on your Ubuntu 10.10, or Maverick Merkaat if you prefer.

First impression

I think that this would be the first question I would ask to a friend that just logged on Ubuntu for the first time: "So, what do you think?". Well, maybe I would wait a little bit, to let him explore the new environment.
I'll try to go back a little while and to remember what was MY first impression of this operative system the first time I used it, that is around a month ago or so. I guess that if you are a Windows or Apple user and you're thinking about giving Linux a shot, you could find this post interesting.

One thing I remember clearly, and it's that when I shut down my computer after the first logon I was amazed!

Of course my first impression has been influenced by who I am, my background in the computer world, and my computer too...so I'll start with that:

What's Ubuntu?

Here I am for my first serious post!

Let's start explaining the meaning of the keywors you'll find on this blog, and talking about the reasons why I started this adventure in the Linux world leaving for a moment the well known Windows lands.

Why should I start a Blog?

...once I tried...and I gave up after two posts...
Maybe this time I'll be more costant, maybe not...we'll see!

For sure this time I have some reasons for opening a blog, unlike the last time, and I know that motivation is everything! Recently I had to use Linux because of university matters and after a refined research I realized Ubuntu was the right distro for me, so I installed it on my netbook and I immediately realized I was really enjoying this new experience!
After a month using Ubuntu I finally decided to open this blog, and here's why:

- I need a diary to write down notes about things I learn
- I want to share what I'm learning. and I hope someone will find this useful!
- Blogs (and forums) saved my life in these first days with Linux, I want to partecipate in this huge community

Briefly, I realized that the community around Linux is part of it! Unfortunately my programming skills are limited and my knowledge of the PC's world to do anything important for it now...so I'll start writing down what I like, what I don't like, what I learn, and some interesting news about Linux and especially Ubuntu while experiencing it.

I guess only newbies like me can find this blog interesting for the moment, but I hope that soon enough I'll be posting something interesting for every non-technical Linux user!

My first impression and considerations about this new world coming soon!

PS: I'm sorry for any misspelling, mistakes and similar, but as you can imagine english is not my mother language....hopefully I'll improve this too together with my bash scripting skills :P
